aka "Slick Willie"
Willie Sutton was born on June 30th, 1901, in Brooklyn New York, where he grew up with his four siblings. Willie earned the nicknames "Slick Willie" and "The Actor" as he became notorious for executing robberies in various disguises. While he did rob banks, he had a reputation of being very polite during his robberies. Over the course of his bank robbing career, Willie Sutton was arrested three times in which he escaped prison each time. In March of 1950, Sutton was placed on the FBI's list of Ten Most Wanted Fugitives. In February, 1952, he was arrested by the New York City police. At the time of his arrest, he owed one life sentence plus 105 additional years. In December of 1969, a judge ruled that Sutton's good behavior in prison and his deteriorating health due to emphysema justified his sentence be reduced to time served. After his release from prison, Sutton consulted with banks on theft deterrent techniques. He died in 1980 at the age of 79.
